The ancient Roman ruins of Zaragoza, Spain

Great visit to Zaragoza to see the fabulous ancient Roman ruins.  Zaragoza is an historic city in northeastern Spain.  The Roman ruins reflect its ancient origins as Caesaraugusta, a Roman colony founded by Emperor Augustus around 14 BCE.

These ruins are part of what is now called the “Ruta de Caesaraugusta” (Caesaraugusta Route), and they include:

1. Teatro Romano de Caesaraugusta (Roman Theatre)

Discovered in 1972, this 1st-century theatre could hold around 6,000 spectators.

It’s partially reconstructed, and the adjacent museum showcases artifacts, models, and multimedia exhibits about Roman entertainment.

2. Museo del Foro de Caesaraugusta (Forum Museum)

Located under the Plaza de la Seo, this museum reveals the remains of the Roman forum, including shops, sewers, and public buildings.

Highlights include an impressive underground section that shows the layout of the ancient city center.

3. Museo del Puerto Fluvial (River Port Museum)

Caesaraugusta had an important river port on the Ebro River, used for trade and transportation.

The museum displays remnants of quays, warehouses, and goods.

4. Museo de las Termas Públicas (Public Baths Museum)

These Roman baths, located near the forum, include remains of pools, heating systems (hypocaust), and other facilities.

5. Roman Walls

Sections of the defensive walls of Caesaraugusta are still visible near the Plaza del Pilar, with the most prominent part featuring a statue of Emperor Augustus.
