The Temple of Claudius, Colchester Castle

Colchester Castle is built directly over the massive foundations of the Temple of Claudius, the largest classical temple in Roman Britain. Constructed between 49 and 60 AD, it served as the centre for the worship of the deified Roman Emperor Claudius. Built when Colchester (Camulodunum) was the first capital of Roman Britain, the temple was a massive stone structure estimated to be 20 meters high, featuring eight large columns. Today,  only the temple foundations remain, yet are an impressive and evocative sight and visitor experience.

The temple was sacked during the Boudican Rebellion of AD 60, restored but finally abandoned when the Roman legions retreated from Britain in the early 400’s to protect their homeland from Barbarian incursions.

Much later (1070s), the Normans built the castle visible today on the sturdy Roman remains.
