Borough Market is one of London’s oldest markets, first mentioned in 1276. This is owing to its position on the south side of London Bridge – the only bridge across the river until 1750, when Westminster Bridge opened. Borough Market served travellers arriving or departing London from places to the south east of London, in particular Canterbury. Borough means a self-governing area; itself derived from ‘burh’ (old English) and ‘burg’ (Saxon) – meaning a fortified settlement. Originally a wholesale market only, today it’s also a bustling retail market and one of London’s favourites. What was once a rowdy cattle market is now home to leading restaurants and film locations; visit 15 Park Street to see the gangs hideout from the film ‘Lock, Stock and Two Smoking Barrels’.
At dusk, the market is closed making for some atmospheric ‘blue hour’ pictures before sampling a beer or two from one of market pubs in the vicinity.
The retail market operates Monday to Thursday from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., Fridays from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m., and Saturdays from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. The wholesale market operates on all weekday mornings from 2 a.m. to 8 a.m.
